Clowns

1. Barnum said, ‘A circus is not a circus without elephants and clowns.’ Now the elephants have gone, clowns are the glue that holds the whole production together.

2. Study any show anywhere and the comedy element is at least 25 per cent of the whole production. A good clown has to be a talented all rounder, proficient at riding, the wire, stilts and acrobatics.

3. Joseph Grimaldi (1778–1837) is regarded as the father of modern clowns. In fact, Grimaldi never called himself a clown and never appeared in a circus ring – performing at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in Islington and the Drury Lane Theatre in Covent Garden.
